Boards have fiduciary responsibility for oversight of health care quality and safety for patients and for the workforce. Research indicates that board engagement in quality and safety governance influences performance outcomes, and better quality performance leads to better financials. In addition, boards can be a valuable resource and support for health care leaders in terms of board expertise and assistance with prioritization, focus, and resources to accomplish key outcomes. Despite this, board engagement in safety and quality is inconsistent across the industry. In organizations with low board engagement, CEOs don’t regard boards as partners in overseeing quality/safety/experience, boards don’t have specific objectives with clearly defined targets, board members lack knowledge about quality and patient safety issues, board members lack interest/proficiency in use/interpretation of metrics, limited board time set is aside for safety/quality discussions, and there is a lack of quality champions on the board.
