In January 2016, CMS began voluntary monthly data collection using the OAS CAHPS tool. The survey asks patients to rate their experience with their outpatient surgery or diagnostic procedure in a hospital-based outpatient surgery department or freestanding ambulatory surgery center. Press Ganey is a CMS-certified vendor and offers the OAS CAHPS regulatory survey to clients who wish to voluntarily collect data in 2016. CMS has proposed mandatory OAS CAHPS participation in January 2018. The earliest Q3 and Q4 2016 voluntary data could be publicly reported is 2018. CMS has indicated that facilities will have the option to choose if the OAS CAHPS voluntary data will be publicly reported.
