The Rising Tide Measure: Communication With Nurses
The critical role that nurses play in the health care system has long been understood. A Press Ganey study further demonstrates this importance and the essential role nurses serve in transforming the health care system. Starting October 2012, hospitals’ Medicare payments began to be partially tied to their scores on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. A Press Ganey study shows that performance on the Communication with Nurses dimension strongly influences four other Patient Experience of Care dimensions within the value-based purchasing (VBP) framework. • THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HCAHPS PERFORMANCE AND READMISSION PENALTIES

With Medicare payment penalties for excess readmissions now in effect, reducing readmissions has become a top priority for hospitals and other stakeholders. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) publicly reports risk-adjusted readmission rates for heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia. The data show significant variation in performance across hospitals, indicating that some hospitals are more successful than others at addressing the causes of readmissions. A new study by Press Ganey suggests that performance on readmission metrics is associated with performance on patient experience of care measures. (December 2012)

  • Bending the Cost Curve: Engaging Physicians in Decreasing Variability in Care

Health reform and other changes have brought new forces to bear on the cost of providing care. Across the continuum, hospitals and physicians are aligning in clinically integrated networks to provide population health management through accountable care organizations and episodic payment. Value-based purchasing and other payment reforms penalize inefficiency and waste. A problem faced by many in health care is identifying those areas with the most opportunity for significant savings. The strategies for improving volumes and prices are limited. Many are finding the key to higher productivity is physicians. After all, physicians order supplies, including surgical kits and medicine. They influence capital equipment purchases. Physician behavior affects quality of care, complications, readmissions, accreditation, community perceptions, patient volumes, length of stay and patient and employee satisfaction – all significant cost factors. Put another way, you can’t bend your organization’s cost curve without physicians on board. (July 2012)
